Galvanization Battle in Latin America

Engineering and architecture students can submit new galvanizing ideas until August 20th.

Creating an innovation ecosystem for the mining and metallurgical industry is an initiative promoted by ‘Nexa Resources’ in alliance with ‘Mining Lab’.

Through the “Galvanization Battle” project, its purpose is to summon students to generate new applications that help galvanization in the Latin American market.

Its main focuses are innovation, durability and sustainability.

University students or students from technical institutes of any semester of engineering and architecture that belong to a Spanish-speaking country in the region can participate.

In addition, groups of up to three members can apply. The winner will be announced through a virtual event open to the public, on September 17th, 2021.

Because it is important?

In this regard, Daniele Albagli, Commercial General Manager & Market Development/Marketing at Nexa points out:

The “Galvanization Battle” is a project that is committed to the exchange of solutions for the prevention of corrosion…

Approximately 30% of the world’s steel production is lost due to the corrosion of metals, which always tend to return to their lowest energy state.

For this reason, we look for solutions related to galvanizing, since this procedure extends the useful life and doubles the protection of the structures”.

What is galvanizing?

“Known as hot-dip galvanizing, it is a process of applying a zinc coating to the surface of carbon steel or cast iron.

It is found in different shapes, parts, structures, sizes and complexities.

Galvanizing is considered one of the best methods to combat corrosion and around 60% of the world’s zinc consumption goes to this technology.

The result of the reaction of zinc with steel is a corrosion-protected metal that lasts for many years, bringing sustainability, durability and safety to any job.”

The “Galvanization Battle” promoted by Nexa Resources has the support of the International Zinc Association (IZA), Neo Ventures, and the Peruvian Association of Galvanizers (Aspegal).

As well as Galva Latina (Latin American Association of Galvanizers), Galva Chile (Circle of Galvanizers of Chile), Colombian Association of Corrosion and Protection (Ascor).

Argentine Association of Hot Dip Galvanizing (AAGIC), ANDI (Galvanizing Committee of Colombia) and the Ecuadorian Federation of Metal Industries (Fedimetal).
